Rui brings over 29 years of family law experience to his practice at Laurel Family Law LLP (formerly CAPY Family Law LLP). He graduated from Osgoode Hall Law School in 1994 and was called to the Ontario Bar in 1996. Rui was a partner with Wilson Christen LLP, where he practiced family law for nearly 19 years, until he retired from the partnership in March 2019, to carve his new path forward. His goal is to guide his clients to the best possible outcome for the client and their family. Preferably, this can be achieved through Collaborative practice and other out-of-court negotiations. Rui's family law litigation experience enables him to better assess and promote reasonable resolutions to family law disputes. Rui mentors other lawyers and law students providing advice and guidance on a confidential basis, and has been recognized by the Osgoode Hall Alumni Mentor Program for his mentoring of Osgoode Law students.
Rui is a Past Chair of Collaborative Divorce Toronto ("CDT"). He was an associate editor for the Ontario Family Law Reporter from 2010 to 2016. Since 2001, he has written materials and been a speaker for the Ontario Bar Association, Law Society of Ontario, Ontario Association of Collaborative Professionals and Collaborative Divorce Toronto’s continuing legal education programs. He is a member of CDT, York Collaborative Practice, Quinte Collaborative Divorce, Ontario Association of Collaborative Professionals, Collaborative Professions of Canada, International Academy of Collaborative Professionals, Ontario Bar Association and Toronto Lawyers Association.
Rui enjoys his country property projects including renovations, farmland improvements and vineyard development and maintenance.
